FAQs
What is the maintenance required for the water softener?
There are no regular maintenance costs from us. Your only responsibility is to ensure that the salt container is filled with enough salt for the regeneration cycles. This typically means refilling the system's salt tank every 8 to 12 months, depending on water usage. The process is simple—just purchase 5 to 6 bags (40 lbs each) of water softener salt from any hardware store, such as Home Depot, Costco, or Walmart, and add them to the salt brine tank. The average cost of one bag of salt is $8, and a typical family home spends around $50 to $70 per year on salt.
How and when do I add salt?
For proper operation of our water softeners, the brine tank should be at least 1/3 full of salt at all times, and no more than ¾ full of salt (marked inside of your salt tank). Simply remove the lid of the brine tank and pour in your salt.
Does the water softener need an electric outlet? What if the power goes out?
Yes, the Clack control valve needs an electrical outlet. The water treatment runs on hydraulic power and the control valve uses electrical power. Your unit is equipped with a battery backup system. In the event of a power outage for less than 24 hours, the control valve will remember all settings and time of day. For an outage over 24 hours, the only item that needs to be reset is the time of day, which will flash when a reset is required. All other settings are permanently stored in the nonvolatile memory.
Does soft water have a salty taste?
No, properly softened water does not taste salty. A well-functioning water softener introduces only a minimal amount of sodium, far less than what is found in a serving of canned vegetables or coffee creamer. If you want to avoid even that small amount of sodium, you can opt for potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride for regeneration. Another option is installing a reverse osmosis system, which removes salt and other dissolved solids.
Will I feel a loss of water pressure after installing a water softener?
No, you will not feel any difference in water pressure. Our systems are built to handle your household's water flow needs. When requesting a quote from us, be sure to describe your situation (number occupants in household, number of bathrooms, etc.) so we can assess your home's needs and recommend the properly sized system for optimal flow.
Why do I need a reverse osmosis system if I have a water softener?
Our water softeners remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) and reduce chlorine, ammonia, and chloramines. However, it does not remove dissolved solids, such as heavy metals (Barium, Cadmium, Chromium III and VI, Copper, Lead, Arsenic, Fluoride, Nitrate, Nitrite), or bacteria. Our reverse osmosis systems further purifies your water by filtering out the heavy metals mentioned above, as well as microplastics, PFAS, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you want high-quality drinking water with minimal dissolved solids, an RO system is the perfect complement to your water softener.
Is my refrigerator's built-in filter sufficient?
If you are happy with the taste, you can opt out of purchasing an RO system. While the carbon filter that comes with your refrigerator offers basic filtration, a professionally installed reverse osmosis system can deliver superior results. A professionally installed system can filter both the water at your kitchen sink and your refrigerator with a single unit. Choosing a reverse osmosis system for both the refrigerator and faucet provides enhanced water quality, reducing dissolved solids (TDS), which improves the taste of your water while also producing clearer ice.
What is the maintenance required for the reverse osmosis system?
The annual Reverse Osmosis service requires filter replacements. Every 3 or 4 years, the system also requires a membrane replacement. Please feel free to contact us at any time to schedule the service.
Why is the water that comes out of my reverse osmosis system “cloudy”?
The “cloudiness” is actually oxygen and nothing to worry about. This is just air that is trapped in your pipes from the installation/filter change and will go away over time.
How long does the system last? Warranty?
All of our systems are designed to be a long-term solution, with a lifespan of up to 15-20 years. You are covered under a 10 year warranty that covers all parts and labor.
What are your product certifications?
All our water softener and reverse osmosis systems are made in the USA and tested & certified by the Water Quality Association against NSF/ANSI Standards.
